In Stepping into the Stream, fly fishing women reflect on their connection to rivers, life's experiences, and each other through their favorite sport. An ode to fly fishing as seen through the eyes of featured women anglers. In the first part of the film, women talk about how they got into fly fishing. Some were taught by their fathers, others were tutored by their boyfriends. Women are featured on many different rivers in the USA. Some of the women then move on to talking about what it was like being early in the sport. Many companies did not make clothes for women, so women had to use their boyfriend's waders and fly rods. Many women were ignored when they went into fly shops, to make matters worse. And some women were made fun of by some of the men who were watching them fly fish. Several women talk about the spiritual side of fly fishing, and what it does to their soul. Several of the women were involved with Casting for Recovery, which is a non-profit organization all over the US which takes women with breast cancer on the water for a weekend and teaches them to fly fish. Many of the women in the film speak honestly and candidly about their experiences with the women with breast cancer. On the spiritual side, Lori Ann speaks about when she ran into a priest and he asked her where she had been (not in church, apparently) and she replied, "I've been on the rivers and in the mountains. That's where God is."
