"The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat..." became synonymous with ABC TV's "Wide World Of Sports" which premiered in 1961. When most think of that phrase and the scene of Vinko Bogataj careening off the ski jump, the name and image of Jim McKay also comes to mind. James K. McManus always wanted to be a sportswriter and began in print, moving to television in its early years and on to becoming a broadcast icon in sports broadcasting. When he got his own national program in those early days, the network titled it "The Real McKay", thus giving him the moniker that we now remember him by. His legendary sports coverage crossed over to international news on September 5, 1972 when Arab terrorists invaded the Munich Olympic village, eventually killing 11 Israeli athletes and a German policeman before five of their own group were killed by authorities. During that time, McKay was a focal point in keeping the network, nation and world up-to-date as events unfolded. McKay narrates this autobiographical program, replete with photos, film clips and interviews with family, friends and sports reporting cohorts.
