When Carmen Gonzalez crossed the US/Mexico border in 1979, it was a valiant and heroic effort to save her infant son, Mateo, from the violent gang lords in her native Columbia who killed her husband. However, in their first terrifying night in New York City, Mateo despaired form decrepit motel room, never to be seen again. With only her faith in her namesake - the Virgin Carmen - sustaining her, Carmen spent the next thirty years undocumented scouring the streets of Queens, desperate for any sign of her beloved son. After losing her job as a live-in maid, Carmen - unemployed and desperate - is forced to turn to the false charity of an unsavory couple with malicious intents. Soon thereafter, Carmen wakes up in the hospital to learn that she has breast cancer. With no one to turn to, Carmen fears for the worst - until she finds herself in the sympathies of a generous and caring 30 year old doctor... whose name is Mateo.
