The story of Franklin William Hooper, director for 25 years of what is now the Brooklyn Museum, is told in a beautiful movie set in 1885 in the glorious New Hampshire countryside. A fictional love story is interwoven amongst characters who played a part in the Abolitionist movement, a woman who is a concert pianist and social reformer, and a lively passel of children to sweeten the plot. A mystery concerning dashing architect Eliot Windsor arises. He is the love interest of heroine Ruth Holden, and may or may not be what he seems, but all is resolved in the uplifting conclusion.
