"And Then They Forgot God" is set in a dystopian future, one in which the environment has suffered (people carry around breathing gear) and people must navigate extremely bureaucratic and rigid rules and procedures. Food is only available through the government, and only to those holding a monthly-issued card. Joe Campanella plays a husband who finds himself in desperate straits when his ration card is rejected because it was in poor condition when received. Despite an official policy that no one in that society goes hungry, Campanella's character receives no help. Though they sympathize, the rule-bound bureaucrats of the story are forced to follow their own procedures, and none of the procedures in place fits the circumstances of the story. A month later, Campanell's character, showings signs of suffering from the lack of food over the previous month, appears at a government counter with that month's food card, apparently in the proper condition. When the clerk remarks that she remembers Campanell's character from the previous month, and asks how he managed, the character says nothing. Instead, he walks away from the counter, revealing that one of his arms is now missing.
