More than one hundred lives lost. Thousands of lives changed. One community newspaper helps its town find hope in the aftermath of the EF-5 tornado that nearly destroyed Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. The tornado took the life of The Joplin Globe's page designer and one-third of the staff lost their homes. Still, The Globe rolled the presses on the night of the storm and has not missed a beat. Reporters examine their roles as community watchdog and residents see their newspaper as a vital source for mourning their losses and moving forward. Much like the hard-rock miners who settled Joplin, the long hours, difficult working conditions, and uncovering of stories from the disaster continues for The Joplin Globe.
