Yveete is a twenty-two year old Mexican American female living in Texas. Yveete has great dissonance regarding her identity as a Mexican American. Yveete decides to accept a ride home from Raymond, the local drug dealer to get back at her mother. This ride home results in disaster when an irate customer of Ray's demands his drug money back -at gunpoint. Miranda decides that Yveete will be sent to Mexico with her mother. She meets her grandmother Luisita, who is not at all what she expected. She is an honest, open woman who befriends Yveete. Their relationship develops into a deep, trusting grandmother-granddaughter union. Luisita defends Yveete from Faustina, who made some comments about Yveete at a family gathering. The women have a verbal and physical confrontation which leads to a future conflict among Luisita and Faustina's sister, Mrs. Marques. Luisita has a loan with Mr. Marques but his wife decides to use this to threaten Luisita with taking her house as collateral if Luisita cannot pay the loan. Determined to financially help Luisita, Yveete decides to enter the local competition in which she has to prove to be a knowledgeable local and therefore a rooted Mexican. With the help of Chema, Neto and Chema's cousin, Hortencia, Yveete has a makeover. This preparation for the competition leads to Yveete understanding her identity and truly validating her relationship with Luisita. Along the way, she not only develops a relationship with Chema, but surprisingly, also with Javier.
