In a small fishing village, the old Thomas Bell has settled down. He is careful not to do business with the locals. But for sentimental reasons, he has helped a fisherman with 800 kroner, which Bell himself borrowed. Now the debt must be repaid. Otherwise the police will be involved. Bell asks his daughter Jessie, who is a switchboard operator, for help.
