The movie's climactic scene portrays the historically authentic murder of Dutch politicians Johan and Cornelis de Witt, orchestrated by the brothers' royalist enemies and carried out by an angered mob. Although the dramatic emphasis shifts away from the bloody deed itself, the viewer is perfectly aware of the fact that they are being castrated alive and their clasped hands hewed off; subsequently the brothers are shot to death and their bodies mutilated.
