From heroin-ravaged jungles to toxic mines where children toil like men, 'Promise & Peril' is a documentary that investigates the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar in a time of flux. Until recently, Myanmar (Burma) was widely considered a lost cause -- a nation isolated, stuck in darkness. But today, the country is cheered on by the White House as it struggles to end five decades of totalitarian rule. Multinationals are suddenly surging in. So are tourists seeking a glimpse of the Buddhist nation's shimmering temples. The military generals who oppressed this country now promise to build a freer, more modern society. But firebombed monks, heroin addicts and guerrilla fighters who appear in 'Promise and Peril' tell a different story. Tyranny does not unravel overnight.
