Gruppe 47 only existed for 20 years from 1947 to 1967, but their influence on literature in the German Federal Republic was immense. In 1977, 10 years after the last meeting, Gisela Reich and Barbara Bronnen asked former members of Gruppe 47 about their self-image: among others the founder and organizer Hans Werner Richter, Joachim Kaiser, Siegfried Unseld and the later Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass. As a spectator, you get an idea of how things used to be at these meetings: vanity met modesty, exuberant self-confidence met great anxiety, and critics and the criticized did not always treat each other kindly.
