Karl lives alone in Munich. He drinks too much, has lost his job and his family as a result, and is suffering from the separation from his little daughter. When he is drunk, he is pursued by demons. He remembers Japan and better times. One day, the Japanese woman Yu appears at the door. Ten years ago, she looked after Karl's father Rudi in Tokyo when Karl had no time for him. Now she is back. She wants to see Rudi's grave and the house he lived in. Karl reluctantly drives with her to the country, but he cannot resist Yu's charm. His parents' house has been empty for a long time, and the siblings are at odds. Yu calls into the well in front of the house and explains to Karl that the dead live deep there. They spend the night in the house, and Karl's demons return. But Yu knows how to deal with them. Karl is increasingly plagued by oppressive memories of his childhood, his siblings, his dead parents. They are back and ask Karl: "What are you doing with your life? Why aren't you happy?" Karl, with Yu's support, begins to fight for himself and his story - for this he almost has to die and go all the way to Japan to find out whether he himself is already a ghost or still alive.
