What does silence sound like? How much does emptiness weigh? Sometimes problems in relationships don't seem to have an answer to these questions. The Broken Tide discusses these same frailties that relationships put forth. The title, in itself, presents an oxymoron, for a tide can never be broken. But, actor-turned-director Sulile Kumar seeks to address these same issues that plague the ever-evolving, constantly confusing complex relationship between man and woman. He believes that the love between two individuals is constant and eternal. But external conflicts and situations ensure that this emotion is engulfed with each bigger and stronger tide running over it. As the initial honeymoon period of a relationship fades out, the wider issues seem larger and people cease to accept the same mistakes that they overlooked initially. When the basic foundation of a relationship is shaken, the love remains, but all that puts it together collapses. Can this be salvaged? Does being in the same situation in a different time ignite the same feelings? What does moving on mean? These are answered in Sulile's maiden attempt at filmmaking. This short film, presented in Tamil and English, gives us a peek into the lives of Preetham and Swetha, a married couple who have mentally decided to part ways. What happens when the two of them are forced to travel together and are made to relive their highs and lows, trying to see problems that plagued them long before far removed from the same emotions. This short attempts to give a peek into the way modern-day relationships work.
