'Raja Harishchandra' is the story of king Harishchandra, the king of Ayodhya. Harishchandra was known to keep his promise and words. He never left the path of truth. One day sage Vishwamitra bets that he'll make Harishchandra break his promise and lead him astray from the path of truth. As planned he goes to Harishchandra and asks him to give him 100,000 gold coins but he says that he'll take it later. Due to the twist of fate Harishchandra has to donate his entire kingdom to Vishwamitra. After taking control of his kingdom the sage demands the gold coins for him. Harishchandra sells his wife Saibya and son Rohit and even himself to fulfill his promise. Saibya starts working as a maid and Harishchandra starts working as an undertaker in the cremation ground. To test him further his son Rohit is killed by snake bite. When Saibya goes to the cremation ground to cremate him Harishchandra demands the funeral fee as he was appointed for the work. He knows that Saibya doesn't have any money yet he had to refuse her. Saibya is charged for killing the Kashi prince and Harishchandra is given the task to behead her. Though he knows that she is innocent he goes ahead to perform his duty. But at that very moment Vishwamitra appears and so does Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati who stop Harishchandra. Vishwamitra accepts his defeat and Harishchandra gets back his son, wife and kingdom.
