It's 1967 in a suburban town. A young pop band have a good following and are beginning to make progress. Despite their first manager ripping them off, they make it to a Battle of the Bands final at London's famous Marquee club where they attract the interest of Russ Goodman - a camp ex crooner turned talent scout for a small, struggling label. But his real interest in the band is far removed from guiding them to pop stardom. As a delaying tactic, he encourages the band to write a new set of songs, but when the manager of a chart group gets to hear them he is so impressed he introduces the band to the boss of a successful record company. As fame beckons, the band begin recording in a studio for the first time. With increasing incredulity, they experience the stark reality of the music business.
