MARKED explores the depths of the untold story of racial passing in the black community. What Georgina experiences in the film is what many black men and women experienced in the past. She changes her skin color to receive better treatment from the world around her in 1961 but she can no longer see her family, attend family functions or even be associated with them. In reference to the time period the "pro black" era is in full effect. So, not only is Georgina changing her skin color for better treatment from whites and the betterment of her family but everything black around her is being celebrated and hated at the same time which puts her in a conflict. Not to mention interracial dating was still illegal in 1961 so not only is she battling leaving her family and them being ashamed of her-she is in a world surrounded by people who are not like her, for love. Georgina loves Al and vice versa but she is alone with no one to fully understand her but herself. But, despite all of this she knows that her unborn child is entering a world full of hate and destruction and no one can be strong for her baby like she can-she was MARKED by her past but it helped build her future.
