Mervyn M. Dymally. First elected to the California Assembly in 1962, the first Afro-Caribbean ever elected to the California legislature. He became the first black elected to the California Senate in 1966, and then made history in 1974 becoming the black Lieutenant Governor in California History. He was then elected to Congress serving from 1982 to 1992, then after a ten year absence from elected office, Dymally makes the remarkable decision to returned to politics and run for the California Assembly at the age of 72.
