It's the late 60's in Córdoba, Argentina, a time of political and social upheaval. Cuarteto is an emerging musical genre. Juan Carlos Jiménez, a 20-year-old boy nicknamed La Mona (monkey), has just begun his career as a singer in a band called Cuarteto Berna. La Mona, thus begins to sing in grotty places and venues on the outskirts of the city. Cuarteto is popular among lower class people who should not get in the downtown area. In this way, moving from dance hall to dance hall, La Mona begins to know and get involved in the night scene: strip clubs, drugs, outcasts and all sorts of low-lives. One night, while cheating on La Turca, a 15 years older prostitute he dates, he witnesses a rather confusing murder that leaves him as the first, questionable eyewitness. La Mona, continues his sky-rocketing career as a singer, conquering his ever-growing audience with his magnetism, charm and way of singing. In the meantime, he becomes more involved in the criminal underworld while he tries to discover what really happened the night of the murder in order to be cleared of the charges and get rid of the police, which continue to pressure him. In the midst of this situation, La Mona meets Juana, a beautiful middle-class woman who supports him and rescues him, to help him become the popular idol he will eventually be. The case is solved by blaming an innocent young man who could not defend himself. Since then and through his songs, La Mona has been tirelessly working to be the voice of society's outcasts and helpless ones.
