Carl trained as a tuba player at the Royal Academy of Music, London (with financial support from EMI Music) and also has a degree in music from Royal Holloway, University of London where he studied music and the moving image alongside performance and composition. Further compositional study was taken privately and via short courses including composing for media, film and TV at the National Film and Television School. His music has been featured on BBC SOUNDS and in the short film 'The Red Sparrow' by Jose Armengol, blending electronic colours with traditional orchestral voices. Carl has performed in orchestras including the London Philharmonic, English National Ballet, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, BBC Concert Orchestra and opera and ballet productions with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 2023 he toured to Australia with the London Symphony Orchestra. Carl has played on soundtracks recorded at Abbey Road, Air, Metropolis, Wave and Rak studios for composers and artists including Daniel Hart (Interview with the Vampire), Bobby Krlic (Beau Is Afraid) Mica Levi (for Channel 4 idents), Bastille (Amazon Music) and Charlotte Harding as well as for classical orchestral releases (Signum, NMC). He also recorded tuba material for use within the haunting sound design of The Zone of Interest (Dir. Jonathan Glazer). Carl has played under conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder, Yannick Nezet-Seguin and Sir Antonio Pappano as well as in orchestral broadcasts on BBC radio and TV as part of documentaries, the BBC Proms and also an orchestral tribute to David Bowie at the Glastonbury Festival. This performance career has allowed Carl to experience all kinds of sound worlds which have influenced his own compositional style. As a background musician for film and television, Carl has first hand knowledge of on set production, most notably being filmed for The Crown (Elstree), Military Wives (Pinewood), The Ipcress File (ITV on location) and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (LH2 & Leavesden). In the world of video games, Carl has performed a number of times with the Video Games Live orchestra, bringing computer game soundtracks to UK concert halls in vivid concerts directed by Tommy Tallarico, Eimear Noone and Austin Wintory. In addition, Carl has also playtested games for Sony, Electronic Arts and Quantic Dream, giving him a deeper understanding of game development and soundtrack trends.
