Zaheer Ahmed was born in Amritsar in 1929 while the region of Eastern Punjab was still under the rule of the British. When he was under 18 years old he went to Mumbai to become a movie star but ended up working in the live theater under Agha Hasher Kashmiri. He played various roles on stage in live theater which included many Hindu religious dramas and the famous drama Rustam Aur Suraab. Under the tutelage of Agha Sahab he learned the art of drama writing. In 1947 during the great partition he migrated with his family to Lahore where he launched his own film magazine, FILM Asia, during this time he adopted the pen name "NAQSH". During that time he wrote his first film called Shama (Suran Lata, Nazir & Darpen) released in 1959. Then he wrote his first Punjabi film Billo Jee (Suran Lata) in 1961. He became well known after writing a movie for film for the actor Sudir who produced and starred in Bhaghavat released in 1963. His last movie was produced by film star Yousef Khan and written and directed by him called Nazra. He has performed as an actor in three of his films: Mafroor, Sham Severa, and Haider Khan.
