Born Edward Matthews ,Tre is a native of Memphis, Tennessee and youngest of two brothers. He first became interested in the entertainment industry through his father ( Timothy "El Espada" Matthews) who was an artist and songwriter on the famed Stax Records. Tre took on filmmaking in his late teens when he realized there was no way he had a lick of a chance to be a rapper and lacked the discipline to continue with sports. He and his oldest brother Tracy Matthews started a production company (with no equipment) and got local business owners to invest in "Rumble on the River" an urban behind the scenes Girls Gone Wild focusing on the ramparts of the Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis title fight in Memphis. The film was an underground hit. Two years later Tyson was back in Memphis for a second fight. They covered the fight and there Tre met Jay-Z and Bobby Dash, CEO of Roc-A Fella Records. He explained he was an up and coming filmmaker/ VJ /producer /whatever for the money. They invited him to NYC for a meeting. He arrived in NYC with 500 dollars and a suitcase eagerly awaiting a chance at the big-time. When He got to Roc-A-Fella records Jay-Z was a no-show and Bobby Dash looked at his work and immediately referred him to the intern dept. Soon after walking out he literally bumped into an artist by the name of Jim Jones (Love & Hip Hop) and explained how he had flown all the way from Tennessee to do a project with Jay-Z to no avail. He gave him a shot and took him under his wing . Matthews went on to direct the Source magazines DVD of the summer for 2004, 'The Original Harlem Diplomats' DVD, which sold over 200,000 copies. Shortly after Diplomat Records and Roc-a-fella records split and every one was left to fend on their own. It was then that he teamed up with a fellow by the name of Young French( French Montana). . During this time he worked on a few film sets and directed an independent documentary 'Pimpin Ain't Dead'. He has also directed and shot numerous Music Videos.
