Boyd, a forward, was selected by the Washington Capitals in the sixth round (No. 177) and signed his first pro contract on March 31, 2015, after playing four seasons at the University of Minnesota, where he had 41 points (19 goals, 22 assists) as a senior. Before that, he spent two seasons with the U.S. National Development Team. He played most of the next three seasons with Hershey of the American Hockey League. He was named a Second-Team AHL All-Star in 2016-17 after finishing with 63 points (16 goals, 47 assists) in 76 games. The native of Hopkins, Minnesota, made his NHL debut against the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 4, 2017, and got his first NHL point, an assist, on March 18, 2018, against the Philadelphia Flyers. It was his only point in eight games with the Capitals. He also played one game during Washington's run to the Stanley Cup in 2018. Boyd scored his first NHL goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Dec. 8, 2018, then scored in each of the next two games.
