Michelle Tofi was born in Germany to a military father and home-maker mother. She is a cross-genre filmmaker with a specialism in comedy and the arts. In 2020 Michelle directed her TV comedy debut for Sky Arts, the semi-autobiographical 'art com' "Sarah Maple's Nazi Sexy Shark Show", starring the artist and show creator Sarah Maple, and featuring David Tennant, Nikki Bedi, Kate Bryan and Will Gompertz. The series was produced by Michelle's creative partner Louise Morton Murray for UK production company Northern Town. Michelle has directed, filmed and edited various short pieces for TV, including 'Is there Anybody Out There?' with the poet and author Salena Godden for BBC4 and 'How Do You Know You're In Love?' with sketch comedian and illustrator Jessie Cave, for BBC Arts online. In addition, Michelle and Louise as 'BYOC Films' have produced arts content for galleries and museums including The Serpentine Gallery and Manchester Art Gallery and have helmed video projects for artists including Sonia Boyce MBE and choreographer Dam Van Huynh. Michelle's camera and cinematography credits span a range of international TV projects including 'Brilliant Ideas', Northern Towns' seminal arts series for Bloomberg, the BBC's 'Front Row Late' and 'The Spark: The Origins of Pride' for Capa in France. She has also worked with Academy Award winners Sally Field and Dustin Lance Black in support of the work of The Human Rights Campaign. Michelle splits her time between London and Cornwall with her wife and son.
