Robert Tasman Hoskin was born full deaf on 16th October, 1962 in Bright, Victoria, Australia. He attended a special deaf school in Melbourne and left at age sixteen. He had a big interest in filmmaking since age eleven and experienced many struggles in reaching his goal as a filmmaker until making some award-winning shorts, filmed entirely in 35mm with his own Arriflex 35 IIC, which was also used to shoot most of his first feature, Two Is Too Many (2011). This film was uploaded to YouTube on 1st May, 2022. He met his deaf Japanese wife, Yasuko Tsuchiya, in August 1986 and they married in the heart of Melbourne in late 1988. They moved to Tokyo, Japan shortly after. They have no children.
