Iranian-born, Afarin moved to London as a baby with her family following the 1979 Iranian Revolution. She graduated from Leeds University in 1998 with BSc Combined Honours in History & Philosophy of Science with Psychology. Her passion for creative expression led her to embark upon a second degree; BA Graphic Design, at the prestigious Central Saint Martin's College, where she graduated with First-Class Honours in 2007. Since then, she accumulated a series of awards and prizes for works she has directed, including the well-reputed Kodak Commercial Awards, where in 2007 she won three prizes including 'Overall Winner'. In 2006, she won paid-internship at Framestore-CFC, and in 2009 she won the AHRC Scholarship. Throughout her time at the NFTS, she experimented with bridging the gap between animation and documentary. She successfully uses mixed-media to explore complex social and political issues through non-polemic narrative - as seen in her graduation film 'Abuelas'.
