His childhood is "the childhood of an ordinary Moscow boy," according to Alexander himself. After graduating from the school of working youth in 1971, he worked for a short time as a photographic assistant, then served in the army (1971-1973). In 1973 he entered the television department of the Faculty of Journalism of the Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov (the journalistic faculty of journalism) and after graduating in 1979 he began working in the sports editorial office of the USSR Public Television and Radio. In 1985, he moved from the Main Editorial Board of sports programs to the Main Editorial Board for youth of the Central Television of the USSR State Television and Radio Committee, which produced programs that were popular at that time ("12th floor" and others) and was reputed to be the vanguard of Soviet television broadcasting. Aleksandr Politkovsky was invited to the project "Peace and Youth" by Ivan Kononov and Vladimir Mukusev.
