Paul Appleby is an American operatic tenor. In 2009 he won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In November 2015 he made his debut at the San Francisco Opera as Tamino in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Born in Chicago, Appleby grew up in South Bend, Indiana. His father was a history professor at Notre Dame University and his mother was a social worker with the South Bend Community School Corp. A graduate of St. Joseph High School, Paul Appleby went on to major in English at Notre Dame University in his native South Bend. He lives in New York with his wife, fellow Notre Dame grad Jacqueline Schmidt, and their daughter.
