Adam Lee Bartlett was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Douglas Lee Bartlett and Lora Dawn Bartlett. At the age of 20 he chose to move to Toledo, Ohio to pursue a career in the music industry, forgoing higher education. While living in Toledo he grew interested in creative writing and began writing on a recreational basis. He also founded Gilead Media, a record label focused on releasing vinyl records. After two years in Toledo he moved back to his hometown of Oshkosh, Wisconsin to be with his fiancée, Cari Tetzlaff, and reconnect with friends and family. While there he continued to grow his record label, fine tune his writing skills, and eventually built a friendship with future filmmaking partner John Pata. In late 2009 Bartlett and Pata began co-writing their feature-length debut, Dead Weight.
