Ultramantis Black

American professional wrestler best known for his work for CHIKARA. Debuted on CHIKARA's first ever show, May 25, 2002, as a superhero called UltraMantis. At "CHIKARA Pick Up Or Delivery" on April 9, 2004, he turned heel on his partner Mister Zero. He changed to a black mask and proclaimed, "UltraMantis is dead. Today, UltraMantis Black is born." Formed the Dark Breed with Hallowicked and they were briefly members of Larry Sweeney's stable Sweet 'n' Sour International. They later left Sweeney's group and continued on themselves, adding Blind Rage in 2005. After Hallowicked split off and turned face, forming Incoherence with Delirious, UMB formed the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple with Hydra and Crossbones. He later added Delirious and Tim Donst (aka Vökoder) to the group, though Donst later turned on UMB to take part in the riot that marked the BDK's formation at the end of the 2009 Season Finale "Three-Fisted Tales" on November 22, 2009. Ares used the Eye of Tyr to lure Delirious away from the Temple, as UMB had previously done to lure Delirious away from Incoherence as revenge on Hallowicked, leading to Delirious injuring Crossbones and ending the Temple. As a result of his feud with the BDK and, later, Sinn Bodhi and the Batiri, Mantis turned face, the first time he'd been one since 2004, and formed the Spectral Envoy with Hallowicked and Frightmare. They would go on to win the 2012 King of Trios tournament. At "AIW Double Dare Tag Tournament", November 1, 2013, he won his first ever championship by defeating Ethan Page for the AIW Absolute Championship. Defeated Delirious in a Loser Leaves CHIKARA match at the 2014 Season Finale "Tomorrow Never Dies." After the match, Hallowicked and Frightmare made their way out to celebrate the win and Delirious used the Eye of Tyr to turn them against UMB, ending the Envoy. Mantis drafted the Batiri (Obariyon and Kodama) and Oleg the Usurper for his team the Arcane Horde for the Challenge of the Immortals Tournament. His last match saw the Arcane Horde (UMB and the Batiri) defeat Crown and Court (Jervis Cottonbelly and Los Ice Creams [Ice Cream Jr. and El Hijo del Ice Cream]) in a Challenge of the Immortals match at "CHIKARA Shock and Aww" on June 14th. Announced on September 9th that he had to retire due to leg injuries. At "CHIKARA Disk" on April 2, 2016, the Nightmare Warriors (Hallowicked and Frightmare) and Battleborn ("Juke Joint" Lucas Calhoun and Missile Assault Man) defeated Oleg the Usurper and the Batiri. After the match, Hallowicked and Frightmare attacked Mantis, took him out of his wheelchair and threw him into the ring. Hallowicked used the Eye of Tyr, which Frightmare had stolen from Jakob Hammermeier at "The Secret of the Ooze," on UltraMantis Black, causing Mantis to be "possessed" by Nazmaldun, the mysterious entity Hallowicked and Frightmare follow. At "Whisper House" on May 7, Mantis put Obariyon and Kodama under some kind of trance, thus turning them rudo again and adding them to Hallowicked's army of Nazmaldun which would come to be known as the heXed Men. Mantis added Icarus after he was eliminated from the Infinite Gauntlet match at "CHIKARA The Distant Future," also held on May 7th. Kobald tried to interrupt the post-match séance at "Tightrope" on June 11, but Mantis put him under the same spell, and did the same to "Mr. Touchdown" Mark Angelosetti at the end of the show. Jigsaw joined them at "King of Trios," though Mantis never officially put him under a spell. At "CHIKARA Supremacy" on December 3, after CHIKARA's Mightiest Heroes (Dasher Hatfield/Heidi Lovelace/Princess Kimberlee/Oleg the Usurper/Fire Ant/Ophidian/Missile Assault Man/the Estonian Thunderfrog) defeated the heXed Men (Hallowicked/Frightmare/Icarus/Jigsaw/Mark Angelosetti/the Batiri [Obariyon/Kodama/Kobald]) in the Torneo Cibernetico, Ophidian stole the Eye of Tyr and used it to release Mantis from Nazmaldun. Mantis chased Hallowicked, saying, "I REMEMBER EVERYTHING!" At "National Pro Wrestling Day 2017," February 4, 2017, Mantis showed up wearing the CHIKARA Grand Championship belt. It turned out that Mantis had won the title during the "lost" Season 17, a series of events filmed at the CHIKARA Wrestle Factory as the first "binge-able" wrestling content. Mantis defeated Hallowicked at "CHIKARA Whatever Happened, Happened," released on March 31, 2017.
