Alex Vincent (aka Alex Vincent Shumway) was born December 14, 1965 in Sacramento California, USA. His mother was a nurse and father was a jazz pianist. Alex took up drumming at the age of ten. At the age of 16 he moved to Seattle, Washington with his mother and attended The Northwest School for the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. At this time his passion for music, particularly that of punk rock music, laid the foundations for his later musical endeavors. (It should also be noted that Alex was class mates with future musicians and band mates Steve Turner, later of Mudhoney, and Stone Gossard, later of Pearl Jam). Upon graduation from The Northwest School, Alex was a co-founding member of what many consider the first "grunge" band, Green River in 1984. After the band's demise in late 1987, Alex attended college at Seattle University and eventually studied comparative culture at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. After graduation Alex stayed in Japan, living mainly in Tokyo, teaching preschool and carrying on his musical career. Alex returned to the US in 1995, and carried on with music while working in politics. For the 20th anniversary of the Sub Pop music label Green River reunited for several shows. This musical background, and his knowledge of Japan and the Japanese music scene helped him to receive his role in the film Big In Japan by award winning director / writer John Jeffcoat and starring the band Tennis Pro. Alex returns to Japan whenever he is able.
