Tom Farnquist was the executive director/curator of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum since 1985 and founder/executive director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS), founding the society in 1978. Farnquist is most notable for his repeated workings with the shipwreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which occurred November 10th, 1975 on Lake Superior. Farnquist oversaw, arguably most famously, the 1995 removal of the Fitzgerald's bell of the wreckage from 530 feet underwater, for use as a memorial to the 29 crew members serving on the Fitzgerald, who all perished aboard the ship when it sank.
