Nicole Chi Amén (1992) is a Costa Rican Chinese writer, director, and producer, currently residing in Costa Rica. She holds a degree in Mass Communication with a focus on Audiovisual Production from the University of Costa Rica, and an MFA in Film and Media Production from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a Fulbright Fellow. Nicole has received notable recognition, including the Director's Guild of America’s Student Film Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for her short film "Comadre", and the AFS’s Texas New Voices Grant for her debut feature-length documentary "Guián", a deeply personal exploration of her grandmother and her Asian-Latino identity. It also received a Special Mention at Visions du Réel (2023) in the Burning Lights Competition. Recently, her short film LOS MOSQUITOS premiered at SXSW (2024) in the Narrative Shorts Competition, where she was awarded Best Latina Director at LALIFF (2024). Nicole’s films have been showcased at prestigious festivals including Telluride, New Orleans Film Festival, BOGOSHORTS, SSFF & ASIA, and Cinélatino Rencontres de Toulouse. Currently, Nicole is developing her first narrative feature film.
