Prior to her career in film, Kafia worked as a cultural analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense and deployed to Iraq in 2008. She is a graduate of Spelman College in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. She earned her Master's Degree in International Relations from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, as well as her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.
