Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois David Hawkins got his start in acting as an infant in television commercials for baby's food and diapers. In his teenage years he drifted more towards the technical side of production as a lighting and sound engineer then ultimately a post-production and special effects editor for the likes of David Wilson and Trauma films. His directorial debut was a short for the 2008 Democratic Convention entitled: America Two Dollars and Twenty-Seven Cents (based on the poem "America" by Allen Ginsberg: "America I've given you all and now I'm nothing. America two dollars and twenty-seven cents January 17, 1956.") It was featured at the Cinemocracy event at the convention.
