Huma Hussain is a writer and filmmaker from Hyderabad, India. Her practice centers on stories of marginalization and includes reflections on her own identity as an Indian-Muslim woman. Through her short films and content, Huma has created a body of work that explores how race, gender, and identity can affect our agency and personal freedoms. Huma's narrative debut, Nafs Said, is a progression in this trajectory. Huma's most recent project is a documentary, Woman Rising, that focuses on the lives of human trafficking survivors in America and also asks broader questions about gender, race, and identity. Her documentary work has led to collaborations with many community organizations and non-profits. In 2018, Huma was awarded a digital media fellowship by Imagining America and the Joy of Giving Something Foundation for creating publicly engaged art. She also held a Full-Tuition Fellowship at Emerson College where she went on to receive her MFA in Film & Media Art.
