Walton W. McCarthy is the Principle Engineer at NORAD Shelter Systems LLC®, a bomb shelter company in Dallas, TX. McCarthy was featured in Modern Marvels: Built to Last" in 2010. McCarthy was born in the Bronx NY in 1951 and is a mechanical engineer with a BS degree from Montana State University. He focused his career on establishing engineering standards for underground shelters. His first book was The Nuclear Shelterist and was published in 1983. The book established some basic guidelines for designing and building underground bomb shelters. His second book was Principles of Protection: U.S. Handbook Of Underground Shelter Engineering Standards, which was first published in 1990 and is now in its 6th edition. The book was written with the help of experts from the US Department of Energy, the US Bureau of Standards, Strategic Applications International Corporation (SAIC), Oak Ridge National Laboratory. McCarthy considers himself a shelterist, not a prepper. He is known for saying "During disasters I see other people first as resources, not targets". He has been on History Channel called "Built To Last" and numerous radio talk shows. He refused to be on the show "Doomsday Preppers" since it did not have scientific basis.
