Zhang Chengye was born on 20 May 1982 in Jilin, China. He is a retired biathlete, who competed also in cross-country skiing. His first year in biathlon was 2002 and he made his World Cup debut in 2003. In 2004, Zhang made a historical placing as he finished 2nd in the 20 km Individual event in Antholz-Anetrselva. His best finish at a World Championships is 14th in the Individual in 2005 in Hochfilzen. At the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Zhang placed 50th in the Individual, 17th in the sprint and 34th in the pursuit. He has been chosen due to his good, stable results to race in the 15 km mass start 4 times during his career. Zhang placed 5th in Holmenkollen in 2007-2008 season, 7th in Khanty-Mansyisk in 2004-2005 season, 10th in Oberhof in 2007-2008 season and 12th in Antholz-Anterselva in 2005-2006 season. His best overall finish is 21st during the 2007-2008 season. He has good positioning in the sprint and the pursuit also - 5th in the sprint in Khanty-Mansyisk in 2004-2005, twice 8th in 2007 in Hochfilzen and in Kontiolahti in 2008; 12th in Pokljuka during the 2004-2005 season. As for the pursuit - 7th in Ruhpolding, 8th in Kontiolahti and 11th in Holmenkollen in 2007-2008. His last Olympics were in 2010 in Vancouver where Zhang placed 19th in the Individual, 32nd in the sprint and 35th in the pursuit. Zhang Chengye won 3 medals from the Asian Games over the years - one gold with the relay and one silver in the sprint in 2007 in Changchun. In 2011 won a bronze medal in the relay in Astana-Almaty.
