Born Sergei Valentinovich Novikov on 27 April 1979 in Chavusy, Belarus, he is a retired biathlete. His first year in biathlon was 1993 and he made his World Cup debut in 1999. Novikov participated in three Winter Olympic Games. He won one silver Olympic medal in the 20 km Individual event in 2010 in Vancouver. Novikov was given a silver medal as well as to the great Ole Einar Bjørndalen. This occurred because both of the them had the exact same finish time. So they shared the podium and were given silver medals. This was the best individual achievement from all the Games for Novikov. He took part in 9 World Championships during his career. His best performance was in the 20 km Individual in Ruhpolding in 2012. He finished 9th. His other good placings were with the relay team. Best of which was 4th in 2005 in Hochfilzen. On a World Cup level, Novikov achieved his best 9th place in the mass start in Oberhof in 2008-2009 season. He was also once 10th in the pursuit in Antholz-Anterselva in 2005-2006, 11th in the sprint in Oberhof in 2009-2010, 12th in the pursuit in Brezno-Osrblie in 2005-2006 and 14th three times - in the sprints in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2009-2010 and in Lahti in 2002-2003; and in the Individual in Östersund in 2008-2009. The best overall finish Novikov ever made was 26th in the 2009-2010 season. His strength in the sport was mostly in the shooting. His success percentage was 89% in 2009-2010 season. He had an 89% from the prone position and a 90% from the standing position. Sergei Novikov announced his retirement after the 2013-2014 season.
