Gözde 'Mimiko' Türkkan (1984, Turkey) is an artist and photographer living and working in Istanbul. Besides mostly producing photography series, Türkkan also makes use of artist's books, text-based works and videos. Her work focuses on gender identities & roles and socially constructed identities while attempting to shed light to some of the deepest drives, desires and fears of the human being through a subjective documentary approach. After receiving her BA degree in Photography & Video in 2008, Mimiko completed her education in the University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where she received her MA Fine Art degree in 2010. She opened four solo shows in Istanbul and one in France at Centre Intermondes La Rochelle following a residency in May 2017. Her work from Pay Here series has participated in Christie's auction Visions d'Orient, Paris (2011) and Sotheby's auction Contemporary Art / Turkish, London (2012). Art HK11 (Hong Kong, 2011), Close Quarters (Istanbul Modern Museum of Modern Art, 2013), Unseen Photo Fair (Amsterdam, 2013), Landskrona Fotofestival (Sweden, 2014), Every Inclusion is an Exclusion of Other Possibilities (SALT, Istanbul, 2015) and Louisville Photo Biennial (21c Museum Hotel, Louisville, 2017) can be named among the group shows, festivals and art fairs she participated in. Having been practicing Kick-boxing and Muay Thai for more than 10 years and following 2 months of intensive training in Thailand in 2011, she earned a Level 1 Muay Thai certificate from the Turkish Muay Thai Federation in 2013 and a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer certificate in 2014.
