Dan Howlett (born June 20, 1985), is a British filmmaker, known for his access based, observational documentary work with fringe groups and subcultures across the USA. Born in Middlesbrough, he attended Nottingham Trent University where he graduated law school in 2007. He then spent almost a decade as a reporter for the British regional and national press before moving into TV and film production. In 2015 Howlett was directing a short form video which was to accompany a feature news piece about snake handling pastors in the Appalachian Mountains. When the snake handler was bitten in the face by a rattlesnake Howlett continued to film with him for months afterwards and the piece ended up being part of a much bigger series which Howlett took the lead on and was eventually purchased by MTV. Since then he has focused exclusively on TV and film work and is now directing his feature debut which documents the lives of former polygamist Mormons who are moving back to the deeply divided community that they fled when they left the church.
