Proficient as a jazz bassist, George Duvivier first studied violin, switching over to the string bass as a teenager. He was studying at New York University when he was drafted for service in the United States Army; he organized bands at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and Fort Warren, Wyoming during his enlistment. After the war's end, he returned to New York City where he was best known as a composer and arranger, as well as playing bass in various organizations. His personal papers are archived at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, USA.
