Mark Souther was born in Gainesville, Georgia, in 1971. He is a graduate of Gainesville High School, Furman University, University of Richmond, and Tulane University. Souther is a Professor of History at Cleveland State University. He is the author of Believing in Cleveland: Managing Decline in "The Best Location in the Nation" (Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 2017) and producer of Cleveland Historical, a mobile app and website that curates places in Cleveland. He came to the attention of ESPN as a result of Cleveland Historical and was engaged to provide historical context for the "30 for 30" film Believeland (2016), in which he appears.
