Illinois-born Marjorie Best moved to Los Angeles after graduating high school to attend the Chouinard Art Institute. She went to work as a designer for the renowned Western Costume Co. in 1926, then several years later moved to United Costumers. When Warner Bros. bought that company in 1936, she accepted a job in the studio's wardrobe department, and it wasn't long before she became one of the company's finest costume designers, noted for her work on men's costumes and period films. She won an Academy Award for her work on Adventures of Don Juan (1948), and was nominated for Oscars in Costume Design for Giant (1956), Sunrise at Campobello (1960) and The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965).
