After living in Milan and working as a model, she moved to Hollywood where she was discovered by an agent and began playing small roles in the late 1990s. By 1997, she got her first leading role in El abogado Del Diablo (1997) demonstrating her acting ability and versatility, which allowed her to play other important roles in productions such as Mighty Joe Young (1998), Celebrity (1998), The Cider House Rules (1999) and The Italian Job (2003). Her acting talent was reflected in Monster, for which she had to become unrecognizable and required strong psychological preparation to play a serial killer, an effort that earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first South African woman to win it. Theron later participated in films such as Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004), North Country (2005) for which she earned another Oscar nomination, Hancock (2008), and Young Adult (2011). In her role as a fearful warrior who aims to save a group of enslaved women in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), she again demonstrated her acting talent for which she received numerous good reviews due to the dominant nature of the character.
