“I have no regrets, because I've done everything I could to the best of my ability.” Robert Redford is a prominent American actor, director, and producer. After studying art in Europe and the U.S., he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made his Broadway debut in Tall Story (1959). He gained early TV fame in shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone. His breakthrough came with Barefoot in the Park (1963), and he solidified his fame with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), which made him a major Hollywood star. He continued to shine in Downhill Racer (1969), The Candidate (1972), The Way We Were (1973), and The Sting (1973), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned him his only Oscar nomination for acting. Redford's filmography includes classics like Jeremiah Johnson (1972), The Great Gatsby (1974), Three Days of the Condor (1975), and The Natural (1984). Out of Africa (1985), co-starring Meryl Streep, won seven Oscars. Despite a series of mixed reviews in the 1990s and 2000s, notable films include Sneakers (1992), The Horse Whisperer (1998), and Spy Game (2001). All Is Lost (2013), featuring a solo performance by Redford, was well-received. He directed Ordinary People (1980), which won Best Picture and earned him an Oscar for Best Director. His directorial projects include The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), and Lions for Lambs (2007). Quiz Show (1994) earned four Oscar nominations. Redford also directed The Conspirator (2010) and The Company You Keep (2012). Redford founded the Sundance Institute and Film Festival in 1981, which became a leading platform for independent filmmakers. For his contributions, he received an honorary Academy Award in 2002, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize in 2008, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
