A talented comedic actress, Amanda began her career with appearances in commercials and small television roles. Her debut came in 1996 when she joined the cast of Nickelodeon's "All That". Her talent and charisma made her quickly become one of the stars of the show, making her popularity soar and giving her the possibility to have her own show called "The Amanda Show" in 1999, in which she showed her comedic skills and her versatility to play different characters. Her show ended up being a hit for Nickelodeon, running for three seasons and earning Amanda several Kid's Choice Awards. By 2002, Bynes co-starred with actress Jennie Garth in the series "What I Like About You", introducing her to a more adult audience and taking her away from the world of children's content. At the age of 15, she leaped into film starring in the comedy film Big Fat Liar (2002) alongside fellow teen actor Frankie Muniz. The following year, she starred in the film What a Girl Wants (2003), in which she plays a teenager from New York who travels to London in search of her wealthy father, played by Colin Firth. In 2006, she reprised her leading role in the comedy "She’s The Man", a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. In 2007, Amanda landed a featured supporting role in the film adaptation of the musical Hairspray. In the film, Bynes plays Penny Lou Pingleton, a young woman who begins an affair with a black boy in 1960s Baltimore. At the age of 23, she played what would be the last role of her career in Easy A (2010), a comic adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter.
