In 1942 he entered the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi, and later studied in the Faculty of Philology of Georgian University. In 1945 he continued his education in Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts. By 1954 he had started to publish articles in the Armenian newspapers in Tbilisi and later in Yerevan. In 1959 he published his first book and in 1965 moved to Yerevan and worked for the newspaper "Grakan Tert." Between 1973 and 1980 he editor of "Screen" magazine, and in the early 90s edited "Hayutiun" weekly. Since 1981 he has been directing films based on his own scripts.
