Peter Appleton is the son of David and Dorothea Appleton of Denver. Appleton got intrigued with editing when working with his father, a magazine editor, as a young teenager. He started his Hollywood film editing career in the 1970s with director Robert Altman, after shooting an Altman little-known but ground-breaking short subject called 'Pot Au Feu' -- and then being asked by the director to edit his film Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976). Next, Appleton edited Robert Benton's The Late Show (1977) (produced by Altman). Since then he's edited many other films both in Hollywood and at his current residence of Portland, Oregon. In the Northwest, Appleton has served as sound editor on nearly all of director Gus Van Sant's films. He's also ADR supervisor on Todd Haynes' film Far From Heaven. Appleton has worked at many of the industry's major mixing stages: Universal's Hitchcock, Sony Picture's Novak, Warner Hollywood, Disney Stage-A and Paramount in L.A.; Saul Zaentz Film Center in Berkeley, and Todd-A.O. in NYC. His current assignment is co-editor/first assistant on 'Elephant', Van Sant's new feature shooting in Portland. Versatility is Appleton's strong suit. He's a Director of Photography as well as Editor. Credits include DP of two features. One of these, _When I am King (1981)_, was produced and directed by his wife Wanda. He's been cinematographer of a number of award-winning commercials and director-cameraman on outdoor adventure television series including many episodes of the American Adventure and American Sportsman for ABC. Appleton graduated Phi Beta Kappa in Journalism from his hometown University of Denver, then earned an MA in Communications from the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania-where he met Wanda. His other interests are tennis, composing on his synthesizer and taking care of his 112-year old historical Oregon home.
