Maio was pioneer in promoting the art of theater in Brazil, starting his career in the early days of Tupi TV, where he performed in several episodes of the tele theater show Grande Teatro Tupi (1951). He was a founding member of the group "Teatro dos Sete", alongside Fernanda Montenegro, Sérgio Britto and Ítalo Rossi, making their debut in 1959 with the play "O Mambembe", and which became one of the most popular theatrical companies during the 1960s. Starting in the early 1970s, he turned to television and performed on several telenovelas and mini-series until his final appearance on Time and the Wind (1985). In the late 1980s, his career dwindled, and he moved back to his native Curitiba and became a visual artist, making a living by selling his paintings.
