Artur Costa de Macedo was trained as cinematographer by Manuel Maria da Costa Veiga with whom he worked for Lusitania Film's newsreels, both in Lisbon and several other locations, and was camera operator in various long movies. In 1921, he started working for Invicta Film, based in O'Porto, producing a number of documentaries centered in villages of the north of Portugal, and ended that contract working with Rino Lupo in the film Mulheres da Beira (1923). With the same film director but for a third Production house, he did the cinematography of Os Lobos (1923). As an independent producer, he filmed documentaries about the Portuguese architectural monuments in 1924, and from 1926 on, he directed the photography of full dramas and did newsreels for foreign producers, namely Éclair (France), and Fox News and Paramount News (USA). In 1928, he formed the Laboratório Cinegráfico, at Avenue 5 de Outubro, no. 297, Lisbon, for the production of documentary and publicity films. News of a Production company associated with João de Sousa Fonseca and Amilcar de Sousa apparently did not materialize. In 1929, Costa de Macedo was working again in the cinematography of Nazaré, Praia de Pescadores (1929) and _Lisboa, Crónica Anedótica'_, both directed by José Leitão de Barros. He lived and in Brazil from 1941 to 1947. He wrote a book, unpublished, on Técnica Fotográfica e Cinegráfica. He was the father of João Bourdain de Macedo and Bourdain de Macedo, also photographers and cinematographers.
